Peak Mountain 3

Column Boulder

Description

[Edit]

This boulder is relatively close to the trail and on the near side of the hill (as opposed to the Lonely Boulder that rests on the opposite side of the hill) and you can see the top of the column, slightly, from the trail when leaves are off in the winter.

This is an unusual looking boulder in that it is comprised of long columns (hence the name) of overhanging stone that formed pillars and geometric edges and rails. The stone on many instances may be loose or hollow; although out of the three problems climbed on it this far, only one large chunk was pulled off, and it was a top portion that was removed out of safety after it was climbed. Nonetheless, use caution when climbing.

Also, bring many pads and travel in numbers if this is to be your destination. The landing is littered with huge blocks and scattered chunks.
