Description
With a 6 mile approach and nearly 2000 feet of scrambling, the Southeast Ridge of Mount Regan might feel like a nice, full day's outing.
Get to Sawtooth Lake. Follow the trail around to the south end of the lake. Drop down to the lake at 8271 feet. Look for the big ridge coming down (the SE ridge of Regan). Hike around the base of the ridge and scrumble up a rubble filled gully on its west side, escaping steepness to the west. Go up through the tree'd slope to the ridge and follow ridge until it bangs to a halt at the base of the summit cone.
Traverse out the east face on a ledge then pick a steep climb/scramble towards the summit. Weave through a few crazy blocks, then, enjoy the final stroll up to the top. Do try to remember then way back down as other options would be grim in the least.
A fun scramble with some loose rock but also some surprisingly fun, steep scrambling and easy bouldering on solid rock.
Location
Back end of Sawtooth Lake, drop down to lower lake at 8271 feet and cross the Southeast Ridge into the large gully. Up from there.
Protection
Most folks solo. If uncomfortable with 3rd to 4th class exposed terrain, do take a harness, rope and a few bits of gear to anchor in with to belay the steeper sections.
